Is eyelid surgery right for you?

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, can improve and refresh a tired appearance by raising and tightening the loose skin that leads to drooping, sagging eyelids. Blepharoplasty is also used as a reconstructive procedure to restore a full range of peripheral vision for individuals whose eyelids have drooped to the point that they interfere with vision. The procedure can be used to address either the upper or lower eyelids.

What does it involve?

Blepharoplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia, and you can return home after a brief observation period, though you will need to have someone drive you. Excess skin and fat are removed to smooth out wrinkles and eliminate bags under the eyes, leading to a younger, brighter appearance.

What is the recovery like?

Most patients can return to normal activities within several days, though those with physically demanding jobs may be told to stay home longer. Generally, vigorous activity should be avoided for two to three weeks. It is important follow instructions from your surgeon to get the best possible results.

You will be provided with medication to ease any discomfort you experience in the days following the procedure. Cold compresses and lubricating ointment are also used to encourage rapid healing. You should be up and about in a day or two. Dressings should be removed a few days after the procedure.

Your eyelid surgery outcome will take a few weeks or months to become final. Do not be discouraged if your early results are not what you had hoped for. The results should last for years to come, though everyone’s face will be affected by gravity, sun exposure and age over time.
